Twirling Candy Colt Oscar's Hope Another 'Rising Star' For Amoss at Saratoga

By any metric, it's been a spectacular run at Saratoga for the Tom Amoss barn this summer, and Oscar's Hope (c, 2, Twirling Candy--Hopeful Princess, by Not This Time) put the cherry on top with a second-out romp, becoming the outfit's third 'TDN Rising Star' of the meet in the process. With penny breakage coming to New York for the first time in the Labor Day opener, the $150,000 Keeneland September yearling was away alertly enough, but was outfooted by the $1-million OBS March breezer, but chilly-on-the-board Epic Quest (Nyquist),...

Saratoga Maidens, Presented By Keeneland: Greenwell's Big Dom Ekes Out Thrilling Maiden Win

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.--Big Dom's (McKinzie) gritty neck victory at Saratoga Race Course Saturday included a couple of noteworthy angles that had absolutely nothing to do with the running of the sixth race. Like his name. And his training partner. It took a strong performance from the Greenwell Thoroughbreds colt to edge Dr. Kapur (McKinzie) after they battled through the stretch. With Jose Ortiz aboard, the first-time starter completed the six-furlong $100,000 maiden special weight for 2-year-olds in 1:09.47 and paid $8.50. First, the name. Philadelphia Eagles fans know well the...

Saratoga Maidens, Presented By Keeneland, Experience Matters as Amoss Filly Wires Field in Saratoga Maiden

Spa Prospector (Authentic) didn't fare well in her first career start. She was seventh, beaten nine lengths in a race at Churchill. But trainer Tom Amoss went into the race with a lot of confidence in his filly. He was proven right and she skipped over the Saratoga slop to win the six-furlong race by 3 1/2 lengths under Jose Ortiz. "Why...

Back here against a mixed field but with experience under her belt as many of her opponents did not, the 5-1 shot broke outwardly at the start and bumped Jetty's Home (Enticed) in the process. The pair recovered from their bumper car beginning with Spa Prospector stepping out to control the pace...
