Wells Bayou Works, Possible for Arkansas Derby

Wells Bayou (Lookin at Lucky) returned to the work tab for the first time since his Mar. 21 GII Louisiana Derby victory with a four-furlong drill in :49.80 (32/56) at Oaklawn Park Monday. With the GI Kentucky Derby postponed until September and no new date yet released for the GI Preakness S., the bay colt could make his next start in the May 2 GI Arkansas Derby. "We'd love to win the Arkansas Derby," co-owner Lance Gasaway told the Oaklawn Park media team after watching Wells Bayou train Saturday morning....

Stage Magic Produces Half-Sister to Justify

Stage Magic (Ghostzapper-Magical Illusion, by Pulpit), dam of champion Justify (Scat Daddy), produced a half-sister by Curlin to the Triple Crown winner in the early hours Tuesday at John Gunther's Glennwood Farm in Versailles, Kentucky. "We are quite excited to have a filly," Gunther's daughter Tanya said Tuesday morning. "We don't fetal sex our mares, so we never know what we are going to get. We were very keen to get a filly since we don't have one out of the mare. So that was very good news. And just...

Triple Crown Nomination Deadline Extended

The late Triple Crown nomination deadline, which was scheduled for Monday, will be extended to an as-yet undetermined later date under an extension agreed upon by racing officials at Churchill Downs Racetrack, the Maryland Jockey Club and the New York Racing Association. While the date of the GI Kentucky Derby has already been pushed back to Sept. 5, officials are still considering possible alternate dates for the GI Preakness S. and GI Belmont S. When all three Triple Crown dates appear to be firm, a late Triple Crown nomination closing...

Letter to the Editor: Rinaldo Del Gallo, III

I participate in a group called "Thoroughbred Horse Racing Discussion" on Facebook and I conduct polls with a large sampling rate. On Mar. 20, I put up a poll responded to by 176 people--a statistically significant pool of people very interested in the horse racing industry. Of these, 113 supported the current plan to have the Kentucky Derby Sept. 5. Only 40 supported having the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May, but without a live audience, as the Louisiana Derby was run last Saturday. Two people said the...

Finding Dates for Preakness, Belmont No Easy Task

Perhaps this will neatly fall in line, with the GI Preakness S. being run two weeks after the GI Kentucky Derby and the GI Belmont S. three weeks after that. That would mean a Sept. 5 Derby, a Sept. 19 Preakness and an Oct. 10 Belmont. Four weeks later, Keeneland would host the Breeders' Cup. That may be the best thing when it comes to restoring some order to a Triple Crown that has been turned upside down by the coronavirus, but it doesn't come without its own set of...

CHARLATAN (c, 3, Speightstown--Authenticity {MGSW & MGISP, $883,362}, by Quiet American) made 30 cents on the dollar seem like Christmas in March and is on to bigger and better things following a thoroughly convincing 10 1/4-length allowance victory Saturday afternoon at Santa Anita. Quickly into stride from the outside gate in a scratched-down field of five just minutes after stablemate and fellow 'Rising Star' Nadal (Blame) stamped his authority on the GII Rebel S., Charlatan looked to...

The Long Game for Maxfield

An undefeated Grade I winner heading into last fall's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita, Godolphin's Maxfield (Street Sense) appeared well on his way to claiming the 1 1/16-mile championship race and a juvenile title to boot. However, fate intervened. Scratched in the days leading up to the event because of an ankle chip, Maxfield underwent surgery to remove the chip and was subsequently given some down time in Ocala before joining Brendan Walsh's Florida-based string at Palm Meadows earlier this winter. "Since we gave him the break, he's...
