Quality Over Quantity: Donamire Farm Represented By Three Derby Day Contenders

During the 2023 foaling season, Donamire Farm welcomed a group of nine foals. Among that foal crop were four colts sired by Constitution, Beau Liam, Dialed In and Blame. For the first time since their early days growing up in the field together, three of the four colts born that year—now known as Chief Wallabee (Constitution), Crude Velocity (Beau Liam), and Trouble Calling (Dialed In)—will have a 'reunion' Saturday, May 2 under the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs. 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Chief Wallabee, runner-up in the GII...

Gilded Bandit Out-Duels Deep Flame To 'Rising Stardom' In Battle Of Second-Time Starters

Triple Crown-nominated Gilded Bandit (Charlatan) out-dueled fellow second-time starter Deep Flame (Into Mischief) to a 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard'-worthy win at Keeneland Saturday for Pin Oak Stud and trainer Bill Mott. Racing with the blinkers added off a 'better than it looked' fourth-place run at Gulfstream Feb. 28 (highlighted here by the TDN's Steve Sherack in his 'Second Chances' series), the 3-1 shot had to sit towards the back of the field while main rival, 6-5 favorite Deep Flame was up on a battle for the lead through...

Dialed In's Trouble Calling Scores Narrowly In Lafayette

Trouble Calling (Dialed In) became the third full black-type winner for his stakes-winning dam with a narrow victory in Friday's Lafayette Stakes on opening day at Keeneland. No better than the fifth betting choice in a tight wagering affair, the Donamire homebred was content to lag towards the back of the pack as Carson Street (Street Sense) galloped them along through taxing fractions of :21.91 and :44.47. Last to make the three-furlong pole, Trouble Calling jumped into the bridle nearing the stretch, was fanned some six or seven paths wide...

Five Fastest Maidens: January 12-19

5. CINISTER CIX, TP, 1/16-6th, 6 furlongs Beyer Speed Figure-83 (2nd) (c, 4, by Curlin--Auntjenn, by Uncle Mo) O-Bartolome Mafla Herrera. B-Breffni Farm. T-Shane Sands. J-Walter Rodriguez. Privately purchased from the breeder after a half-dozen mostly uninspiring starts, the Curlin filly ran a career-best Beyer and appears to be just coming around. The pedigree is solid: dam Auntjenn was twice stakes-placed, five times ran Beyers between 81 and 83 for Brad Cox, and out of four foals to race has also produced GSW Petulante ($254k) and SW The Donegal Clan...
