Constitution's Lighter Debuts a Winner at Horseshoe Indianapolis

Lighter (Constitution), sent off the 6-5 choice for this unveiling over a muddy track, wasn't particularly hurried off the blocks as Exodus (Not This Time) sprinted to the front while leading Playonwords (Thousand Words) through a quick opening quarter in :21.64. Starting to launch his rally leaving the far turn and heading to the quarter pole, Lighter swung out to the three path turning for home, took over from the fading pacesetter and drew off to score by an eye-catching 7 1/2 length margin over longshot Jr. Bartholomew (Danish Dynaformer)....

Jerry Bailey has won the GI Kentucky Derby twice and has provided expert analysis on the NBC broadcast of the race for years. So who better to join the TDN Writers' Room podcast team for its annual Derby handicapping show than the Hall of Fame jockey? The podcast is presented by Keeneland and Bailey was the Gainesway Guest of the Week. Much of the talk after the draw centered around morning-line favorite Renegade (Into Mischief) getting the one hole. Bailey doesn't think that will be a problem. "I know the...

Leading First-Crop Sire of 2026: Nominations from the Floor

Just finished reading the top picks for the juvenile sires (Who Will be the Leading Freshman Sire of 2026? and More Predictions), and rubbing more than two nickels together over calling Essential Quality as top second-crop sire and having clients with mares already under that horse, I thought I would take a crack at the 2023 sires. Top Pick: Life Is Good ($60,000, WinStar) The classic Into Mischief-over-Distorted Humor has proven to be a winner and that nick will unabashedly continue to produce runners. The horse was fast, and his...

Suffragette! Constitution's Swing Vote Sweeps Into Maiden Office At Gulfstream

Swing Vote (Constitution) went off as the favorite on debut in Hallandale Dec. 28. The late juvenile was slow out of the blocks and on hold approaching the stretch, but she offered a determined run at the rail and a strong gallop out after finishing third. Serving as the chalk once again here, the 9-5 choice raced behind the speed in the two path as a scramble ensued on the engine up the backstretch. The filly moved right past the 'Insighted' Beneficence (Into Mischief) around the far turn and began...

Kentucky Value Sires for 2026: Part 6 – The Big Guns

And so we reach the apex of the fee pyramid we've scaled in stages all the way up from the basement. In reality, this final ascent is too extensive to be coherent: we're clearly not comparing like with like, between stallions available at $60,000 and la crème de la crème at $250,000. But since we can hardly reveal to an unsuspecting world that Into Mischief is a pretty good stallion, let's establish our parameters straightaway. Our purpose today is to seek the residual value that lurks even at this rarefied...
