NYRTC Backstretch Community

Michael Dubb and NYRTC team discuss the importance of the backstretch community during the midst of Coronavirus pandemic.

Dubb recounts the story of his activism with the NYTRC, “My involvement with the backstretch really began with the construction of the daycare center around the year 2000. It was shortly thereafter that I met Nick Caras and began to understand the work that the Racetrack Chaplaincy does. They kind of complete the loop. And my initial concern was childcare, but I realized the needs of the backside are so much greater than just childcare.

“The Racetrack Chaplaincy not only provides a spiritual base for people which is so important, but it provides a caring and nurturing environment back there for people who truly have a difficult life. They mean so much to so many people in so many ways, I was taken back.

“They'll help people with housing needs, clothing needs, transportation needs, any kind of need that people have. But I learned long ago that you can't have a community without a spiritual base. It's the center point of a community. And that's what really the Backside and the Chaplaincy do together. They provide a real sense of community and that spiritual base.”
