Triple Crown hero American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) turned in the final work of his racing career Monday at Santa Anita, zipping four furlongs in :46.60 and galloping out five furlongs in :59 2/5. It was the second fastest of 33 at the distance Monday. Santa Anita clockers caught American Pharoah in splits of 11 4/5, 23 1/5, 34 3/5 and 46 3/5.

“His work was very impressive,” trainer Bob Baffert reported via text. “Very happy with the way he is coming into race.”

Racing Manager Justin Zayat was also pleased with the work.

“He worked in :46, but it was :46 easy,” said Zayat. “We're very, very happy. We could not be happier with him. He's right on target. He always works well every week, so it's no surprise to us. But we can see that right now he's in the zone. He's feeling it, and that's the feeling he's giving everyone right now. All systems are go and we're expecting a huge race from him.”

Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Classic will be the final race of American Pharoah's career and his first start since finishing second in the Aug. 29 GI Travers S.

BULLET FOR BEHOLDER

Spendthrift Farm's Beholder (Henny Hughes) sizzled five furlongs at Keeneland Monday, covering the distance in a bullet :59.40 in preparation for Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Classic.

“She went very well; a nice tune-up,” reported trainer Richard Mandella. “We picked her up a bit at the eighth pole and she finished very well. I'm ready.”

Owner B. Wayne Hughes added, “I'm glad we're here. I'm very grateful to have a mare like her.”
