A Fashionable Result

Arnold Zetcher and Michael Tabor’s Fashion Plate (Old Fashioned), a sharp maiden winner going six furlongs at third asking at Santa Anita Dec. 29, handled the immediate jump to the big leagues while making her two-turn debut in the GI Las Virgenes S. yesterday. Sent to the front by Gary Stevens, she clicked off fractions of :23.19 and :46.26, and kept on finding more in the stretch to fend off favored GI Hollywood Starlet S. heroine Streaming (Smart Strike) by a half length.

“This is unbelievable,” Zetcher commented. “When she took the lead that was exciting, and when they came to her, she dug right in.” A debut seventh behind subsequent GII Santa Ynez S. heroine Awesome Baby (Awesome Again) at Del Mar Aug. 4, she finished an improved third at Hollywood Dec. 8. She is perfect in two tries since switching to dirt. Trainer Simon Callaghan added, “When they came to her, she really dug in and tried real hard. She’s a special filly. It means a lot to win this race. Gary [Stevens] put up a great ride. She went nice fractions, she went pretty quick and I think that was a testament to her courage and ability that she was able to do that and sustain the run.” As for what’s next, Callaghan added, “We’ll look at the [GI] Santa Anita Oaks [Apr. 5] and if she does well there, maybe we’ll take her to [the] [G] Kentucky [Oaks May 2].” She was partnered by Stevens for the first time Saturday. “She’s a very cooperative filly,” he said. “You never know first time going long. She broke very relaxed and I didn’t want to get her rolling [too early]. She was content to stay inside of Rafael [Bejarano on Taste Like Candy] around the first turn and at the three-quarter pole, I knew it [the pace] wasn’t good for either one of us, even though she was relaxed so I let her out a notch and she did what I wanted her to do. This was pretty much the hardest I’ve had to work this meet.”
