Wild Dude, miles out of it early, but in front of slow-breaking Kobe's Back, benefitted from a meltdown pace to annex this “Win and You're In” affair. Distinctiv Passion (With Distinction) and Masochistic (Sought After) knocked heads early through crazy splits of :21.44 and :43.93, while Glacken Too eyed those two intently and Wild Dude and Kobe's Back sat well out of the picture. Glacken Too took over from the leaders briefly at the head of the lane, but Wild Dude and Kobe's Back emerged ominously and flew by their rivals to run one-two, with Wild Dude finding the line just in time.

Wild Dude kicked off his 2015 season with a third behind the ill-fated Conquest Two Step (Two Step Salsa) in the track-and-trip GII Palos Verdes S. in January, and defeated Kobe's Back in the GII San Carlos S. in March. Sixth when shipped East for Aqueduct's GI Carter H. in April, Wild Dude was third behind Distinctiv Passion in the GIII Los Angeles S. May 25 and behind Masochistic in the GI Triple Bend S. June 27. He upended Masochistic at 11-1 in Del Mar's GI Bing Crosby S. July 26, and finished second to Saturday's GII Kelso H. hero Appealing Tale (Tale of the Cat) in the GII Pat O'Brien S. Aug. 22.

“Well I knew Distinctiv Passion and Masochistic had the speed, so I let them go,” offered winning pilot Rafael Bejarano. “I was only really concerned about the horse that was going to come from behind me, Kobe's Back… I was waiting to make my own decision. I let him relax and let him finish like he has won before. The last time that he ran seven furlongs [in the Pat O'Brien] he finished second and he still ran well, but it wasn't really his style. His style is to come from behind and make one run.”

Added trainer and co-owner Jerry Hollendorfer, “I saw the fractions a little late, but when I saw the 43 and change go up, I thought we had a chance. Then I started thinking Kobe's Back was going to close, too, and he did.”

Hollendorfer said Wild Dude would go on to the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint Oct. 31 providing he exits Saturday's performance in good order.
