All samples collected from 2017 Breeders' Cup horses have been cleared by the Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory at the University of California, Davis.
All horses competing in Breeders' Cup races Nov. 3 and 4 at Del Mar underwent pre-race testing for total carbon dioxide (TCO2) levels in blood. The Maddy Laboratory then conducted post-race testing of both blood and urine samples for prohibited drugs, including cobalt, collected from the first four finishers in all Breeders' Cup races and any additional random horses selected by the stewards consistent with CHRB protocol.
The Maddy Laboratory is accredited by the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC) and is the only racing laboratory in the Western Hemisphere certified by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities. The Maddy Laboratory's standard protocols look for over 75 anabolic steroids and in excess of a thousand other prohibited drugs and substances. Routine testing in California exceeds recommended testing standards. All samples were in compliance with CHRB regulations.
Previously, the CHRB and Breeders' Cup Limited as authorized by the CHRB conducted out-of-competition testing of all horses preparing to compete in the Breeders' Cup and all of those samples tested clear.
