Hey Doc handed trainer Tony McEvoy a first Group 1 win with a decisive score in Saturday's Australian Guineas, clocking the fastest time for the race since Apache Cat in 2006. Racing keenly in fourth down the backstretch, Hey Doc was bottled up on the heels of the pacesetting Fuhryk (Aus) (Star Witness {Aus}) turning for home but soon found room on that rival's inside. The dark bay squeezed his way through on the rail and drew off to a convincing score from the rallying G1 Victoria Derby winner Prized Icon.
Hey Doc broke his maiden at first-asking at two but failed to capitalize on his talent thereafter, and was shelved after beating just one home in the G1 Blue Diamond S. He kicked off his 3-year-old season with a trio of wins, however, culminating in the G2 Stutt S. going a mile at Caulfield. He was a narrowly beaten third in the G1 Caulfield Guineas and was making the third start of his prep on Saturday, having finished third in the G3 Manfred S. and first in the G3 CS Hayes S. on Feb. 4 and 18. McEvoy was non-committal on future targets, telling racenet.com.au, “He has achieved what we set him out to achieve but 3-year-olds really profile well in the [G1] Doncaster [Mile]. We'll just let the dust settle but he could go to the George Ryder and the Doncaster but no decisions today.”
