Baffert Seeks Fifth Santa Ynez

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has three chances to score his fifth victory in Santa Anita's GII Santa Ynez S. Saturday. Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman's Pretty N Cool (Scat Daddy) followed her debut victory at Del Mar July 19 with a win in that venue's GII Sorrento S. Aug. 12 and finished second to likely Eclipse winner Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro) next out in the GI Del Mar Debutante S. Sept. 5. Fifth in the Desi Arnaz S. Nov. 15, the gray was last seen finishing fourth in the Dec. 12 GI Starlet S. at Los Alamitos in her first attempt around two turns and cuts back to the same distance as her Sorrento win here.

Her stablemate Treasuring (Smart Strike) looks to collect her first black-type win in this spot for Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings and Edward McGhee. The chestnut donned cap and gown by 7 1/4 lengths at Los Alamitos Sept. 19 and finished a close second in the Desi Arnaz, but she was last seen finishing fifth behind Street Fancy (Street Sense) in the Starlet. Speedway Stable's One Last Shot (Any Given Saturday) rounds out the Baffert trio. A first-out winner on the dirt at Del Mar, the dark bay finished second in the Juvenile Fillies Turf S. there Sept. 7 and was off the board in the Surfer Girl over this venue's turf course Oct. 10. Runner-up to My Dynamo (Discreetly Mine) when returned to the dirt in a 5 1/2-furlong Del Mar optional claimer two starts back, she failed to factor when put back on the lawn for the GIII Jimmy Durante S. Nov. 28.

Trainer Manuel Badilla sends out J C Racing Stable's undefeated Code Warrior (Society's Chairman), who comes into the race off a treble of victories at Golden Gate, including an impressive seven-length maiden win and a win against males in the Golden Nugget S. Nov. 7. The dark bay took her record to three-for-three last time in the Golden Gate Debutante S. Nov. 28 and she tries dirt for the first time in this spot.

Big Chief Racing and Gene Voss's Decked Out (Street Boss), who captured her career bow here May 7, finished second when shippedn east for Belmont's Astoria S. June 4. Remaining in New York for the summer, the Keith Desormeaux trainee finished third in the GIII Schuylerville S. July 24 and was fourth in the GII Adirondack S. Aug. 15 before finishing fifth last time in the GII Pochontas S. Sept. 12. A second-out graduate over this strip Sept. 26, Forever Darling (Congrats) bobbled and lost all chance at the start of the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Oct. 30, finishing eighth behind the undefeated Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro).
