Barretts Set to Hold January Sale

A total of 230 horses are catalogued for the Barretts January Mixed Sale to be held Wednesday at the sales company's new complex at Del Mar.

Wednesday's session, the first to be held since Barretts' move from the Pomona Fairplex to Del Mar, features short yearlings by such Kentucky-based sires as City Zip, Discreetly Mine, First Samurai, Mineshaft, Tizway and Stay Thirsty in addition to local stallions such as champion Acclamation, Marino Marini, Papa Clem, The Pamplenmousse, Tribal Rule and California stalwart Unusual Heat. Sires of newly turned 2-year-olds include Broken Vow, Flower Alley, Paddy O'Prado and Square Eddie, the latter of which had a spectacular year with his freshman runners in 2015. The breeding stock section of the January sale include mares in foal to Haynesfield, Lakerville, Macho Uno, Morning Line, Oxbow, Point of Entry, Shackleford, Smiling Tiger and Twirling Candy.

During last year's sale, a total of 248 horses were reported as sold for $2,104,800. The average of $8,487 and median of $5,000 were largely unchanged from the 2014 renewal. A trio of horses topped the 2015 event. Hip 121, Stormy Gigi (Storm Boot), offered in foal to Kodiak Kowboy; hip 301, a yearling colt by War Chant–Primp (Bernardini); and hip 328, a filly by Gone Astray–Striking T (Smart Strike), each fetched final bids of $50,000.

The sale gets underway at 11 a.m. PT Wednesday. Full results will appear in Friday's edition of the TDN.
