Speightstown Filly Off the 'Mark' in Spa Debut

5th-SAR, $83,000, Msw, 8-15, 2yo, f, 5 1/2fT, 1:04.16, gd.

+BEAT THE BENCHMARK (f, 2, Speightstown–Tabarin, by El Prado {Ire}) was purchased for $300,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga last August and delivered on her promise with a rallying score in her career debut just over one year later. The filly recently posted a steady diet of four-furlong breezes in a characteristic move for the Chad Brown barn, and was given a 4-1 chance in this spot. Settling in behind the leaders in the pocket behind a quarter-mile in :22.83, she was guided off the rail on the turn and made solid progress as Love and Lemons (Lemon Drop Kid) took the lead in upper stretch. Fully extended from there, Beat the Benchmark edged past the stubborn leader in the final furlong and crossed the wire a neck in front. The winner is a half to Abraham (Distorted Humor), SW, $536,601. Tabarin–herself a half to MGSW and GISP Miss Isella (Silver Charm), MGSW Sir Cherokee (Cherokee Run) and MSW Guam Typhoon (Distorted Humor)–produced a filly by Distorted Humor earlier this year and was bred back to that sire. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $49,800. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
