Beauty Parlour Tops Bumper Day At €1.6m

Beauty Parlour in the ring | Sarah Farnsworth

The preordained script which cast Beauty Parlour (JPN) (Deep Impact {JPN}) as the heroine of the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale was acted out in front of a packed auditorium with no twist in the tale as she duly sold for the sale-topping sum of €1.6 million.

Adding extra intrigue to the story however was the extraordinarily determined efforts of Peter Brant to accrue so many members of the Wildenstein Stables Dispersal. Buying in the name of his Connecticut-based White Birch Farm on the telephone from Paris through first Henry Beeby and then Nick Nugent, Brant's total outlay on Friday was €5,210,000 for 10 mares, including Beauty Parlour (lot 1431) and her 4-year-old half-sister Blue Kimono (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) (lot 1432) for €675,000. The two mares sold in foal respectively to Kingman (GB) and Australia (GB).

Taking into account a Wildenstein yearling from the Orby Sale, three horses in training and five foals bought on Thursday then the horses known to be bought by White Birch Farm amount to 19 for a total of €7,510,000.

Having outbid Paul Makin for Beauty Parlour, Brant, the owner-breeder of Gulch (Mr Prospector) and noted art collector, now has the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches victrix and her filly foal by Dansili (GB) to add to his expanding bloodstock empire, as well as the appropriately named Peinture Rare (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), the Group 2-winning half-sister to Peintre Celebre (Nureyev) who sold as lot 1415 for €410,000 carrying to Dansili (GB). Another high-profile purchase was Amerique (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), whose Siyouni (Fr) filly topped the November Foal Sale on Thursday at €775,000. Twenty-four hours later the 7-year-old mare (lot 1428) was herself sold in foal to Siyouni's sire Pivotal (GB) at €975,000, with John O'Connor of Ballylinch Stud as underbidder.

Dramatic Increases
Such a high-profile dispersal of mouth-watering bloodlines was always going to have a positive effect on the Goffs November Sale and the €7,835,000 spent on the 27 Wildenstein mares offered on Thursday played a significant part in the aggregate rising by 115% to €18,619,000, while the average rose by 98% to €86,199. The median was also up, by 20%, to €30,000 but apart from these significant increases, the notable feature of the first day of mare trade was a very good clearance rate right from the off. At the close of a hectic day's trade, 216 of the 242 mares offered, or 89%, had been sold.

Date With Deep Impact Beckons
One of the more expensive members of the Wildenstein Dispersal who didn't go the way of White Birch Farm was lot 1412, the G2 Prix de Malleret winner Pacific Rim (Ire) (Singspiel {Ire}), who was bought by Riki Takahashi and Emmanuel de Seroux, making a determined play to have the final say over Henry Beeby on the phone at €680,000.

Confirming that the 6-year-old, who is in foal to Zoffany (Ire), had been purchased for Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm, Takahashi said, “Singspiel is my old friend and I saw a lot of him in her. She had a lovely temperament––she liked me and I liked her so the communication was good.”

Like so many good mares bought in Europe and America, Pacific Rim will be sent to the star of the Japanese stallion ranks, Deep Impact (JPN), and will replicate a cross that has worked in the shape of this season's GI Japanese Oaks winner Sinhalite (JPN), who is a daughter of GI Del Mar Oaks victrix Singhalese (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}).

Reiley McDonald of Eaton Sales also got in on the Wildenstein action, buying lot 1429, Andromeda Galaxy (Fr) (Peintre Celebre) for €400,000. The 8-year-old Listed winner, whose dam Arlesienne (Ire) (Alzao) is a sister to GI Beverly D S. winner Angara (GB), was sold in foal to Tweenhills Stud's treble Group 1-winning miler Charm Spirit (Ire).

Typique To America
There was plenty of interest throughout the day for mares outside the Wildenstein Dispersal. Typique (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 1360) had just two unplaced starts for David Wachman but, as a daughter of champion race filly Denebola (Storm Cat) from an outstanding Niarchos family, the 3-year-old's pedigree is such that her residual value would always be high. Laurent Benoit of Broadhurst Agency certainly shares this view as he outbid Riki Takahashi to buy Typique for €450,000 on behalf of an existing client.

The Frenchman commented, “She may well go to the States. It's hard to find a better pedigree than this, she would suit any country.”

A year ago Typique's sister Mohini (Ire) fetched €270,000 in the same ring when also offered by Kiltinan Castle Stud and bought by Hubie de Burgh. Another half-sister, Beta Leo (A P Indy), has produced French Listed winner Bolting (War Front) as well as maiden winner Senga (Blame), who was fourth in this season's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac.

Galileo Mare For Monceaux
Henri Bozo of Ecurie des Monceaux stepped in to buy lot 1438, Newton's Night (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a winning sister to the Sunderland Holdings-bred Group 3 winner Dress Rehearsal (Ire). Offered by Jockey Hall Stud, the 5-year-old has a filly foal by Dark Angel and was sold in foal to Lope De Vega (Ire) for €440,000.

“She's from a very lively family and is by the great Galileo,” said Bozo, who added that she had been bought for a partnership.

That lively family includes this season's G2 Qatar King George S. winner Muthmir (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and dual Group 3 winner Majestic Queen (Ire) (Kheleyf), who topped the Goffs London Sale of 2015 when sold to Godolphin for £825,000.

Newton's Night was offered by Jacqueline Norris of Jockey Hall Stud, who, one lot previously had sold Love Is Blindness (Ire) (Sir Percy {GB})) (lot 1437) in foal to Sea The Stars (Ire) to Hubie de Burgh and James Harron for €380,000. Bred by Sven Hanson from his Listed winner On Fair Stage (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), the unraced 4-year-old mare is a half-sister to G1 Prix du Jockey Club winner and young Gestut Rottgen stallion Reliable Man (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}) and was bought for an unnamed Australian breeder.

Fascinating Acquisitions For Regan
Maurice Regan of Newtown Anner Stud has recently retired his homebred dual Group 1 winner Fascinating Rock (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) to Ballylinch Stud and, having retained a share in the stallion, recruited five well-bred individuals to help him on his way in his new career.

From the Godolphin draft Regan bought lot 1380, Mrs King (Ire), a winning daughter of Dubawi (Ire) and multiple Grade II winner Coretta (Ire) (Caerleon) for €350,000. The 3-year-old will not go straight to stud, however, as her new owner plans to keep her in training in the hope of reaping some black type before visiting Fascinating Rock.

One who will be a member of his first book is lot 1349, Evening Rain (Raven's Pass), who was sold in foal to Siyouni (Fr) from the Tinnakill House draft for €230,000. All five mares were bought through Eamonn Reilly of BBA Ireland.

“We bought four mares in Keeneland,” said Regan. “We're looking for mares with speed and precocity and we may well buy a few more in Newmarket next week. There's been plenty of interest shown in Fascinating Rock already.”

Later in the session Regan also recruited a Wildenstein mare from the immediate family of G1 Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) when the 5-year-old Pleasant Valley (Ire) (Shamardal) (lot 1417) was knocked down at €340,000 in foal to Makfi (GB).

Lot 1401, Meri Shika (Fr) (Spirit One {Fr}), the Castlebridge-consigned stakes-placed mare in foal to Kitten's Joy, was also added to the Newtown Anner fold for €260,000.

Shrill A Thrill For Badger
The 72-strong Godolphin draft added €3,715,00 to the first-session turnover with another standout being the beautifully bred Shrill (GB) (Shamardal), who made an early noise during the first batch of Godolphin horses to come under the hammer on Friday morning. She will ultimately travel to Australia after continuing her racing career in Europe in the short term. The 3-year-old (lot 1240) was bought for €300,000 by Grant Pritchard-Gordon of Badgers Bloodstock for an unspecified Australian client.

“She will stay in training for now, probably in Ireland, before being covered to southern hemisphere time,” confirmed the agent. “Frankel (GB) is a strong possibility for her first cover.”

Trained by Willie McCreery for Godolphin, the speedy Shrill won twice over the minimum trip as a juvenile and was also placed in the Listed Excelebration Tipperary S. Her dam Wood Vine (Woodman) was unraced but has been a consistent producer as the dam of six winners, including the Group 2-winning fillies Silkwood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) and Silent Honor (Ire) (Sunday Silence), while her grandam Massaaraat (Nureyev) is a Listed-winning sister to Miesque.

Pritchard-Gordon continued, “Her form is solid. She only needs to improve a couple of lengths to get some bold black type. She's quick and she's a lovely individual for a Shamardal. She's easy to mate for Australia––she's an exciting prospect.”

David Nagle's Barronstown Stud also got involved early in the day when going to €260,000 for Moyglare Stud's Instant Sparkle (Ire) (Danehill) (lot 1257), the dam of this season's G3 Killavullan S. winner Making Light (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}). The 12-year-old sister to G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Irresistible Jewel (Ire) was sold with an April cover to Ballylinch Stud freshman Make Believe (GB).

Simannka Heads To Australia
Paul Makin had to settle for the role of underbidder when it came to Beauty Parlour but he did manage to snare treble winner Simannka (Ire) (Mastercrafsman {Ire}) (lot 1345) who will be heading down under after being bought for €200,000.

“She's not been bought to go to Marcel,” clarified Makin, who is standing the G1 Racing Post Trophy winner at the National Stud in Newmarket for 2017. “I have bought one mare for him and I will be buying some of his foals and yearlings but this filly will go to Australia to be trained by Starcraft's trainer.”

Garry Newham has not held a training licence for a number of years and has been working in equine transport, but since Makin's relocation of his homebred G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange winner Sky Kingdom (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) from Newmarket to Australia, Newham, who guided Starcraft (NZ) (Soviet Star) to three Group 1 victories, has been persuaded to return to the training ranks.

Simannka, who was trained by Dermot Weld was Listed-placed in July, was offered from her breeder's Aga Khan Studs. Her dam Simkana (Ire) is a Kalanisi (Ire) half-sister to champion 3-year-old and Aga Khan stallion Sinndar.
