Bernardini Colt Lands Sophomore Bow in Just One More

Third Day | Lauren King photo

The once-raced Third Day had to work for it, but managed to remain unbeaten in two career appearances with a hard-fought success in Wednesday's Just One More S. at Gulfstream Park. A good-looking winner of a sloppy Monmouth maiden at first asking on the Haskell Day undercard July 31, the dark bay opened at 3-5 for this first run since, touched 6-5 on the drift, yielding favoritism for a few clicks to Basha, but was ultimately off at even money to 6-5 Basha. Third Day settled in fourth on the inside early on and began to warm up to the task while being asked for run entering the far turn. Still having to be ridden along nearing the stretch, he loomed up three deep under a right-handed stick, joined Barry Karafin Bets inside the final furlong and fought his way to a neck success. A $150,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, Third Day breezed a quarter-mile in a slick :21 flat and was knocked down to Town and Country and Spendthrift Farm for $575,000 at last year's OBS March sale. Third Day's stakes-winning dam produced an Into Mischief filly in 2016 and has already foaled a filly by Carpe Diem this year. The Just One More did not qualify for black-type for this running.
