TAKAFUL (c, 3, Bernardini–Sablah, by Distorted Humor) couldn't have been more impressive when he aired by eight lengths en route to 'TDN Rising Star' status on debut at Belmont last October, but little had gone right for the Shadwell homebred since. Third in the nine-panel GII Remsen S. at the Big A Nov. 26, he set a hot pace in the GIII Jerome S. in early January before stopping to a distant last. Eighth in the GII Xpressbet Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Mar. 4, he was scratched after running off in the post parade at Belmont June 29. Backed at 3-1 here getting back to a sprint for the first time since his unveiling, the dark bay set the pace off the inside through splits of :22.13 and :45.81 and poured it on through the lane to defeat big-figure favorite Patternrecognition (Adios Charlie) by 5 1/4 lengths. Sablah, whose second dam is champion Shadayid (Shadeed), produced a colt by Daaher in 2016, a filly by Hard Spun this year and was bred back to Bernardini.
