Born Gold, 27, Passes Away

Goldikova, daughter of Born Gold | Racing Post

Foaled in Kentucky in 1991, the daughter of G1 Prix Saint-Alary winner and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Riviere D'or showed little on the racecourse, winning once in seven starts for trainer Dominique Boulard. Retired to the paddocks, the full-sister to MG1SW Gold Splash (Blushing Groom {Fr}) eventually produced 16 foals over the course of her career. Fifteen lived to be named with 14 making the racecourse, good for 13 winners and six black-type winners. The record alone does not tell the whole story, as her best produce, the aforementioned Goldikova, G1SW Galikova (Fr) (Galileo {Ire}), the GSW & MG1SP Anodin (Ire) and the G3 Prix Vanteaux victress and G1 Prix Jean Prat third Gold Luck (Fr) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}) were her ninth, 12th, 13th, and last foals, respectively. Her second dam was French champion older mare and 1981 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Gold River (Fr) (Riverman).

There were early indicators that Born Gold was capable of producing quality offspring, as her 1997 filly, Gold Round (Ire) (Caerleon), won the G3 Prix Cleopatre and has already left three black-type winners, among them LNJ Foxwoods' G3 Prix Minerve scorer Golden Valentine (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}); while her year younger GSP full-sister Born Something (Ire) has two SP offspring. Sent to Green Tune in 2001, Born Gold's G3 Prix de Guiche victor Gold Sound (Fr) was the result.

Although she only made 20 starts, Goldikova proved a revelation for the Wertheimer brothers, as she was voted European Champion Older Mare in 2009 and 2010, the same years she was a U.S. champion grass mare on the backs of wins in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile. Also a winner of that year-end showpiece in 2008, Goldikova accumulated four French highweight laurels, a trio of English titles and landed 14 top-flight races. Her 2014 daughter Terrakova (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) found group success in the G3 Prix Cleopatre and was third in the G1 Prix de Diane in 2017.

Galikova (Fr)'s triumph in the G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille made her the second Group 1 winner for Born Gold. Mated with Dansili (GB), the French SP 4-year-old colt Galikeo (GB) is the result. The only full-sibling to Goldikova, Anodin plied his trade over three seasons in the familiar blue and white silks, his greatest win the G3 Prix Paul de Moussac. However, he was second or third an additional five times at the highest level, which saw him runner-up in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile, third in the G1 Queen Anne S. and three times in France. His oldest foals are juveniles and he stands at Haras du Quesnay.
