Jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot set a new record for number of wins in a year on the flat for a European jockey when a four-timer at Chantilly on Tuesday saw him reach 275 victories. Peter Schiergen previously held the mark with 271, which he set in 1995 to best Sir Gordon Richards's long-held record of 269 set in 1947.
“It's a great achievement,” said Boudot's agent Herve Naggar. “He will continue riding to the end of the year, so hopefully he can get close to 300 winners or maybe close to Tony McCoy's record.”
National Hunt legend Tony McCoy recorded 289 wins in the 2001/02 season.
“The aim from the middle part of the season was to break the record as whatever he touches seems to win. It's just been unbelievable,” said Naggar. “You must also remember he is not a light jockey, so it's not easy to make the weight all the time. It's very impressive. He will ride until the end of the year and he does have rides in Japan this weekend and in Hong Kong, but they will be round trips so he can carry on riding in France. For now, though, we are just going to enjoy this moment.”
Among Boudot's 275 winning rides this year have been Group 1 scorers National Defense (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Waldgeist (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}).
