Broken Vow Filly Fastest at OBS Friday

by Jessica Martini

A filly by Broken Vow turned in the fastest quarter-mile breeze during Friday's fifth session of the under-tack preview ahead of next week's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale. Hip 925, consigned by Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables, covered the distance in :20 3/5. She was the third juvenile of the week to hit that mark.

“She's fast,” admitted Dunne. “We were excited to see how fast she would go when we finally said go. The whole winter, we've been trying to slow her down.”

The dark bay filly is out of graded stakes winner Spectacular Moon (Migrating Moon).

“She is a big, tall, pretty-bodied filly,” Dunne added. “And she trained well all winter.”

Six horses shared the bullet furlong time of :9 4/5, bringing the total to record that fastest time during the week to 13. Shading :10 Friday were: hip 783, a filly by In Summation from the Boutte Sales consignment; hip 876, a colt by Yes It's True consigned by Bobby Dodd; hip 877, a filly by Parading from Southern Chase Farm; hip 922, a colt by Even the Score consigned by All Dreams Equine; hip 931, a filly by Flatter from Niall Brennan Stables; and hip 932, a colt by Candy Ride (Arg) consigned by Eddie Woods.

The June sale continues to gather strength and consignors are increasingly taking advantage of its later date on the calendar, while the catalogue is also bolstered by the auction's placement behind an April sale which has set records the last three years.

“I wouldn't say any of us buy a horse specifically to sell at the June sale, but when you see where the chips fall and you have ones that need to get shuffled back, it doesn't seem as bad to have to wait for June as it did three or four years ago,” Dunne admitted.

He added, “We entered a whole bunch in the April sale and maybe two-thirds of what we entered didn't get in. So we mixed and matched and have about 40 that we selected for the June sale.”

The under-tack preview concludes with a final session Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m.
