Cali Invader Says 'Adios' to Competition in Delta Princess

Shane's Girlfriend became the first filly to ship in from the West Coast to win Saturday's GIII Delta Downs Princess S., walloping her rivals in stakes-record time.

A member of the second crop of her Ocala Stud-based stallion, Shane's Girlfriend was consigned by the latter to this year's OBS June Sale and breezed a quarter-mile in a smart :21 1/5 before selling to Dennis O'Neill for $95,000. No better than the 8-1 third choice debuting against SP Spooky Woods (Ghostzapper) at Santa Anita Oct. 28, Shane's Girlfriend set a pressured early pace, but kicked on nicely in the lane and reported home a 5 3/4-length winner.

Trying a route of ground here as the second betting choice, the Florida-bred jumped alertly from gate eight, but was content to settle kindly from second beneath Flavien Prat as Flatter Up carved out sound early fractions of :23.06 and :47.16. The latter carried a tenuous advantage into the final quarter of a mile, but Shane's Girlfriend pounced on that one midway on the turn and sprinted home to post a double-digit margin. The final time shaved 0.73 seconds off the previous stakes record of 1:38.71 set by Four Gifts (Even the Score) in 2008.

Pedigree Notes:
Shane's Girlfriend is the second black-type winner and first graded winner for Adios Charlie, himself a $400,000 OBS graduate, runner-up in the GII Peter Pan S. and GII Dwyer S. at three and a half-brother to MGISW Teaks North. The winner's dam, a $210,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling purchase by the E. Paul Robsham Stable, has produced four winners from five to make the races and foaled a filly by Ocala Stud's Uncaptured (Lion Heart) before returning to that stallion in the 2016 breeding season. This is the further female family of MGISW Critical Eye (Dynaformer) and MGSW Takeover Target (Harlan's Holiday).
