Phipps Stable homebred Carrumba (Bernardini), last seen finishing second to MGISW Curalina (Curlin) in the GIII Shuvee H. July 31, will be turned out for 60 days of rest. Winner of the GIII Top Flight Invitational H. Apr. 10, the gray was second to “TDN Rising Star” Cavorting (Bernardini) in the GII Ruffian S. May 14 and checked in third to that rival in the GI Ogden Phipps S. June 11.
“She's fine, she's sound,” said trainer Shug McGaughey. “I just didn't like the way she had been finishing. Even after the race here, I breezed her on the turf one day and I didn't really like the way she went on that, so I said, 'let's just give her a little bit of time.'”
The Hall of Famer also reported that MGSW Ironicus (Distorted Humor) is doing well since returning to galloping a few weeks ago, but is unlikely to defend his title in the GII Bernard Baruch H. Sept. 5.
“He's back training,” McGaughey said. “He's doing fine but where I'm going to run him, I don't know.”
Second in this venue's GII Fourstardave H. last term, which is now a Grade I, prior to his win the Bernard Baruch, Ironicus was forced to miss the GI Breeders' Cup Mile last October due to a canon bone fracture. The Stuart Janney homebred made a successful return to the races this spring with a win in Belmont's GIII Fort Marcy S. May 7 and was second to Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in the GI Woodford Reserve Mahattan S. when last seen June 11.
While Ironicus is unlikely to make a start at Saratoga, his half-sister On Leave (War Front) is scheduled to run in the Riskaverse S. at the Spa Aug. 25 for McGaughey and Janney. Never off the board in four starts, the gray earned her diploma in her sophomore bow at Belmont June 9 and followed suit with an allowance victory there July 17.
