“TDN Rising Star” Cathryn Sophia dominated this local prep for the GI Cotillion S. Sept. 24 in what was the equivalent to a paid workout. Reserved in fourth through an opening quarter in :24.38, the heavy favorite continued to lope along comfortably through a half in :48.05. Charging up to tackle the leader approaching the far turn, the bay seized command at the top of the stretch and cruised clear under a motionless Paco Lopez to win for fun. Winning her first four starts, including the GII Forward Gal S. and GII Davona Dale S., by a combined 41 1/2 lengths, Cathryn Sophia suffered her first loss when third behind longshot Weep No More (Mineshaft) and fellow “TDN Rising Star” Rachel's Valentina (Bernardini) as the favorite when trying two turns for the first time in Keeneland's GI Ashland S. Apr. 9. Trainer John Servis said they would skip the GI Kentucky Oaks and instead point for that weekend's seven-furlong GIII Eight Belles S., but changed his mind after it was announced undefeated champion Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro) had spiked a fever and would not run on the first Friday in May. That decision proved wise when Cathryn Sophia charged home to a decisive 2 3/4-length victory in the Oaks under Javier Castellano May 6 and she was last seen finishing third to “TDN Rising Star” Carina Mia (Malibu Moon) as the favorite in Belmont's GI Acorn S. June 11. The winner is scheduled to make her next start in the Cotillion, a race for which Songbird is also possible. Cathryn Sophia is the first out of the unraced Sheave, who is a daughter of GSW & GISP Belterra (Unbridled). Sheave has since produced the 2-year-old filly Great Craic (Bullsbay), a yearling filly by Denman (Aus) and a weanling filly by Bullsbay. She was bred back to Street Boss.
