Cavorting, an authoritative heroine of last summer's GI Test S. at GII Prioress S. at the Spa, brought her 'A' game here following some disappointing form since.
Fourth as the 3-1 favorite in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Keeneland Oct. 31, she was third as the 7-5 chalk after getting squeezed at the start in the GI La Brea S. at Santa Anita Dec. 26. Subsequently freshened, the Stonestreet colorbearer returned with a runner-up finish as the even-money chalk in Aqueduct's GIII Distaff H. at the Big A Apr. 17.
Looking for her first win beyond seven furlongs from a rail draw here, Cavorting tracked on the outside from fourth as Calamity Kate (Yes It's True) ticked off early splits of :23.75 and :47.05 while closely shadowed by favored Carrumba. Cavorting made a menacing move while three deep on the far turn and powered clear down the stretch to win for fun.
“The key was sitting back and able to make a run, which she did,” trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said. “Her start in California [third in the La Brea], I was a little disappointed in, and in her last race a very fast filly beat us [Paulassilverlining] and we had kind of a funny trip. This was a big race. It gives us more confidence now.”
As for what's next, McLaughlin continued, “Winning that way, it looks like she'll be able to get a mile or plus. There's a big race at 1 1/16 miles [GI Ogden Phipps] on Belmont S. Day [June 11] we might try.”
Cavorting, tabbed as a 'TDN Rising Star' out of her Belmont debut during her 2-year-old season, also captured a graded stakes that season in Saratoga's GII Adirondack S.
Promenade Girl's 2-year-old colt Thirstforlife (Stay Thirsty) finished a close third in Churchill's Kentucky Juvenile S. at first asking. She also has a yearling colt by The Factor and was bred back to Uncle Mo.
