Champion Azeri Sells for $2.25 Million

After failing to sell on a bid of $4.4 million when offered in foal to Ghostzapper (Awesome Again) at the Keeneland January sale earlier this year, Azeri (Jade Hunter) finally changed hands yesterday, going to Katsumi Yoshida for $2.25 million. The Eclipse Award-winning older mare in three consecutive years from 2002 to 2004 and the Horse of the Year and GI Breeders' Cup Distaff heroine at Arlington Park in 2002, Azeri won no fewer than 11 Grade I events and retired with 17 wins from 24 starts and earnings of $4,079,820. Barren in 2006, she has since produced three foals, including Take Control (A.P. Indy), who is in steady training with Bob Baffert at Santa Anita.
