Superstars California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) and Dortmund (Big Brown) threw it down in Del Mar's GII San Diego H. July 23, and both worked Sunday as they prepare for a rematch in the GI TVG Pacific Classic S. Aug. 20. The former, who became the richest Thoroughbred in North American history when he took the G1 Dubai World Cup in March, was credited with four furlongs at his Los Alamitos base in :47.80 (4/21). He was clocked in splits of :12.80, :24.80, :36.80 and a five-furlong gallop out in 1:01.80 with exercise rider Dihigi Gladney aboard. “Terrific,” trainer Art Sherman said. “He did it breezing, well in hand. He looks great and we're right on schedule for the Pacific Classic.” California Chrome bested Dortmund by a half-length in the San Diego.
Dortmund breezed at Del Mar under rider Flavien Prat alongside maiden stablemate Above Board (Eskendereya). Going in splits of :12.40, :24.40, :35.60 and :47.00, his official five-furlong clocking was :59.20 (2/91). He galloped out seven furlong in 1:23.40. “He went nice and I was happy with his work,”offered conditioner Bob Baffert. “The [San Diego] moved him forward. We wanted a strong work today and we got it.”
California Chrome and Dortmund will both have one more work before the Pacific Classic.
