Dual Eclipse winner California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) breezed a best-of-83 five furlongs in :59 1/5 Saturday morning at Del Mar in his final work for next weekend's GII San Diego S.

With regular exercise rider Dihigi Gladney aboard, the chestnut clocked splits of :12, :23 4/5, :35 3/5 and :46 4/5 with a six-furlong gallop out in 1:13.

“He's got his game face on,” said trainer Art Sherman. “He's a different horse when he's getting ready to run. Dihigi had plenty of horse when he came by me. I'm very pleased with what I saw.”

California Chrome was last seen scoring a record-setting victory in the G1 Dubai World Cup Mar. 28. He is using the San Diego as a prep for the GI Pacific Classic Aug. 20.
