Claiborne's Clay Hancock Passes at 71

Claiborne Farm's Clay Hancock, a daughter of Arthur “Bull” Hancock Jr., died from a heart attack Monday, according to published reports. She was 71.

The legendary “Bull” Hancock will be inducted into the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame as a Pillar of the Turf Friday.

Although not involved with the day-to-day operations of Claiborne, Clay Hancock founded PAWS, the Paris Animal Welfare Society, and was also a member of the Water Hay Oats Alliance. She is credited with introducing longtime friend Adele Dilschneider to her family's Paris, Kentucky, operation.

Dilschneider and Claiborne, of course, have teamed up through the years to campaign several prominent runners, headed by champion homebred Blame (Arch), hero of the 2010 GI Breeders' Cup Classic in dramatic fashion over the previously unbeaten Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}). The duo also raced and bred 2014 GI Donn H. winner Lea (First Samurai). Both Blame and Lea are current Claiborne stallions.

Hancock's ashes will be spread over Claiborne Farm; services will be private.
