Five stakes races with purses totaling $729,400 will be contested Saturday at Gulfstream making up the Clasico Internacional del Caribe. This will be the first time the races, restricted to runners from countries in the Confederacion Hipica del Caribe, will be held outside of Latin America and the Carribean since their inception in 1966. The featured event of the day will be the $300,000 Clasico del Caribe presented by Fasig-Tipton. The contest for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles features a field of 12, including Panamanian Group 2 winner Fray Angelico (Pan) (Concerto). The chestnut will be saddled by legendary three-time Clasico del Caribe-winning conditioner Alberto Paz-Rodriguez. “If the jockey wants to go to the lead, he'll go to the lead. If he wants to take him back, he'll take him back,” Paz-Rodriguez said of his charge. “One race he led all the way and got beat by a really superior horse, who won't be here because he got hurt. In the last race he won, he came off the pace.”
