Clock Ticking on Plus 10 Foal Registration

Breeders have less than one month remaining to register newborn foals of 2016 for the Plus 10 bonus scheme, a £5.5-million scheme which pays bonuses of £10,000 on top of prize money across some 550 2- and 3-year-old races in Britain and Ireland. As time ticks away on the deadline to qualify foals of this year, £2.34 million has already been paid out through the end of July. A change in the rules now entitle breeders who pay the £150 fee a guaranteed bonus of £1,000 for every victory by that foal in England and Ireland.

“In just seven months, Plus 10 has amassed bonus payments of £2.34 million to breeders and owners of 2- and 3-year-olds racing in Britain and Ireland,” commented Plus 10 Chairman Julian Richmond-Watson “More than 160 breeders have benefited from the bonus prize pool, which targets maiden, conditions and novice races at a class 2-5 level in Britain, and all non-black-type, 2-year-old races and a select number of three-year-old maiden winners in Ireland. In order for greater numbers of breeders from both Britain and Ireland to benefit, breeders must heed the call to register their foals for Plus 10.”

Breeders have also enjoyed a significant advantage in the sales ring when offering foals made eligible for the program. In 2015, Plus 10 registered foals sold for median sales prices which were €7,500 higher at the Goffs and £6,000 higher at the Tattersalls foal sales.

Ballyhimikin Stud's James Hanly said: “I have been a supporter of Plus 10 from the start, all of our horses are registered annually, I believe it is a good scheme that is of real benefit to the industry and one that must be continued.

He added, “Registering a horse for Plus 10 gives it the potential to win £10,000 on top of prize money when it commences racing and it is for this reason that I register my horses for the scheme. Racehorse owners are the absolute key to our business and we must do everything we can to make racing attractive to owners.”
