Godolphin's G1 Golden Rose S. winner Astern (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro) has recovered from a setback that ruled him out of the G1 Caulfield Guineas and is set for a meeting with G1 Golden Slipper winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Capitalist (Aus) (Written Tycoon {Aus}) in the G2 Roman Consul S. Oct. 1, trainer John O'Shea told Racing.com.
“He has fully recovered from his elevated temperature and has returned to normal work at Osborne Park,” O'Shea said. “He will run in the Roman Consul on Saturday at Randwick before his Melbourne plans are confirmed.”
Those Melbourne plans could include the G1 Coolmore Stud S. against 3-year-olds at Flemington Oct. 29, or the weight-for-age G1 Darley Classic, with double the purse at A$1-million, a week later.
Astern, who won the G2 Silver Slipper S. and G3 Kindergarten S. last season, is a perfect two-for-two this season, having won the G2 Run to the Rose S. and the Golden Rose Sept. 10. He finished 11th behind Capitalist in their only meeting in the Golden Slipper. Capitalist looks to rebound from a flat fourth-place finish over soft going in the G3 San Domenico S. Aug. 13.
