Dalmore jumped straight into the deep end off a sharp track-and-trip maiden breaker at seventh asking at Santa Anita Mar. 25 and was soundly beaten when eighth in a muddy renewal of the GI Wood Memorial Apr. 9 at Aqueduct. Flattening out to fifth after making a middle move in the Apr. 30 California Chrome S. at Los Alamitos, the bay bounced back with an optional claiming tally here May 29.
Breaking smoothly under Kent Desormeaux as the second choice, Dalmore sat in a clear third as heavy favorite and 'TDN Rising Star' Danzing Candy pressed longshot Beaumarchais (Big Drama) through a middling quarter in :23.26. The tempo quickened significantly to the tune of a :46 flat half-mile and Dalmore made a strong, sudden bid for the lead at the top of the far bend. Drawing on even terms with Danzing Candy turning for home, the two of them battled tenaciously before Dalmore began to do better at the sixteenth pole and edged away for a half-length victory, his first graded score.
“I thought he merited a chance today and he proved me right,” winning trainer Keith Desormeaux said. “It's been a nice three race series here with this horse. Each race [that he's won], he's had a perfect trip. I think that's attributed not only to Kent's prowess, but also the fact that he's had small fields and it's always ended up a decent pace. Although, in the two previous races the pace was slower and today was quick, so good job by Kent judging the pace today.”
Dalmore's two-time winning dam Silver Breeze (Silver Deputy) has a 2-year-old half-brother by Broken Vow named Sergio, a yearling full-sister and a half-brother by Alternation born this term.
