Danon Figo A First Japanese Stakes Winner For Into Mischief

Danox Co. Ltd's Danon Figo (Jpn) (Into Mischief) was under serious consideration for Sunday's G1 February Stakes following a very strong third-place effort in the Feb. 1 G3 Negishi Stakes at Tokyo, but made the most of this path of lesser resistance to become the first Japanese stakes winner for his all-conquering stallion in Monday's Listed Kakitsubata Kinen at Nagoya.

Sent off the even-money favorite with Yuga Kawada back at the controls, the bay colt settled in fifth position for the run into the first turn as fellow American-bred Jasper Robusto (Khozan) opened a daylight advantage.

Asked to come after that front-runner with about 600 meters to travel, Danon Figo made eye-catching progress along the inside, was steered wide off the final corner and pulled confidently clear to take it by three lengths. Godolphin's U.S.-bred import Wayward Act (Maclean's Music) ran home for second, while Jasper Robusto settled for fourth.

“I'm relieved we lived up to the expectations as the favorite,” winning trainer Yasuo Tomomichi told Japanese media. “I really wanted to go to the February Stakes, but rather than jumping straight into Group 1s, I thought we'd steadily earn prize money and build up step by step.”

Danon Figo is the first foal for Ollie's Candy, winner of the 2019 GI Clement L. Hirsch Stakes and also placed in the GI Del Mar Oaks before selling to K I Farm for $1.65 million at Keeneland November in 2020. She was then bred to this sire on an early cover and exported to Japan, where she foaled Danon Figo on Feb. 25, 2022.

The mare is also represented by a 2-year-old Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) filly and a yearling filly by Contrail (Jpn), to whom she is also due in 2026. Danon Figo, the 191st stakes winner overall for Into Mischief, was given an entry for the G2 Godolphin Mile at Meydan on Mar. 28.
