Deauville Heads Million Pre-Entries

Deauville (inside) | Adam Coglianese

Deauville (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), last-out winner of the GI Belmont Derby on his U.S. debut July 9, is the most intriguing among a group of 15 horses pre-entered late Friday for next Saturday's GI Arlington Million in suburban Chicago. Owned by Mrs. Fitri Hay, Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, Deauville will look to become just the second sophomore to win the Million and the first since 1983 when Tolomeo (Ire) upset the legendary John Henry.

Deauville, whose trainer Aidan O'Brien is a two-time winner of the centerpiece of the International Festival of Racing, is one of four foreign raiders for the Million, a group that includes this year's G1 Jebel Hatta hero Godolphin's Tryster (Ire) (Shamardal); Mondaliste (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), winner of last year's GI Woodbine Mile and runner-up in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile; and Decorated Knight (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), last-start winner of the G3 Meld S. at Leopardstown July 14. Also engaged is The Pizza Man (English Channel), who will try to make history of his own by becoming the first to win back-to-back runnings of the original seven-figure test.
