Mick and Wendy Ruis's Union Strike (Union Rags) was in excellent condition the morning after capturing Saturday's GI Del Mar Debutante S., Mick Ruis confirmed Sunday. Conditioned by his daughter Shelbe, Union Strike edged clear to notch her first career victory by 2 1/4 lengths in the seven-furlong test.
“She's perfect,” Mick Ruis said. “She came out of it sound, ate up well. Now it's a matter of not getting too excited and keeping her good and happy. We'll go in the [Oct. 1 GI] Chandelier [S.] at Santa Anita.”
The Chandelier is a “Win and You're In” qualifier for the GI 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies to be run in Arcadia Nov. 5.
Union Strike, purchased for $375,000 as an Ocala April 2-year-old in training, gave Shelbe Ruis the fourth win of her young training career.
