Derby Prospect George Stubbs Debuts At The Curragh

Camelot | Coolmore

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-bred horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday's Observations features a likely Derby prospect.

4.50 The Curragh, Mdn, 3yo, 10fT
GEORGE STUBBS (IRE) (Camelot {GB}) is the pick of Ryan Moore of the duo from Ballydoyle and as a half-brother to Galileo's Criterium International hero and Melbourne Cup runner-up Johannes Vermeer and dual Group 1-placed Wembley has obvious Derby credentials on the back of favourable remarks from Aidan O'Brien last week. He will have to be smart to cope with Al Shaqab Racing's Beresford fourth Shaihaan (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) from the Donnacha O'Brien stable, while his own stablemate King Of Sparta (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is a half-brother to Snowfall (Deep Impact) who could leave his two-year-old form well behind.

4.28 Kempton, Cond, 3yo, c/g, 8f (AWT)
KING'S TRAIL (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) comes back to the course and distance of his debut success in December for the Charlie Appleby stable that has used this circuit so effectively in recent years. From the family of the Prix Ganay winner Cutlass Bay (Halling), the 2,000 Guineas entry encounters another unbeaten colt engaged in that Classic in Amo Racing's Lingfield maiden winner Sin City (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) from the Kevin Philippart De Foy stable.

4.05 Doncaster, Mdn, 3yo, 10f 43yT
SUPER CROWN (IRE) (St Mark's Basilica {Fr}) is a significant newcomer from the William Haggas stable, having cost Saeed Suhail 950,000gns at the Tattersalls October Book 1. A half-brother to the G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Ottery (Dubawi), the Derby entry is out of the 2014 Preis der Diana third Longina (Monsun) from the family of the Deutsches Derby and Japan Cup hero Lando. He meets some interesting peers including Ecurie Ama Zingteam's highly-promising Andrew Balding-trained Newmarket runner-up Turty Tree (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), the twice-raced Valenday (GB) (Postponed {Ire}), a Kevin Ryan-trained half-brother to the exciting Zeus Olympios (Night Of Thunder) carrying the silks of the Late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, and Godolphin's newcomer Marasi Bay (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), a Charlie Appleby-trained son of the Cheshire Oaks winner and May Hill runner-up Dubai Fountain (Teofilo).
