Dettori to Ride 'Toast' in Pegasus

Italian Frankie Dettori will ride 2014 GI Breeders' Cup Classic runner-up Toast of New York (Thewayyouare) in the $16-million GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. at Gulfstream Park Jan. 27. Trained by Jamie Osborne, the 6-year-old made a winning return at Lingfield in December after over 1,000 days off. (Click here for a Chris McGrath feature on Osborne and Toast of New York).

Osborne told At The Races, “It's fantastic. Just to have him back is great and to have him back in the sort of form where we can seriously consider this is beyond our wildest dreams. We're all very excited about it. Frankie is going to ride him. He's going to go out a week before and have a few rides for Wesley Ward to get his eye and get a feel for Gulfstream. We've got it all planned.”

Despite the lengthy break, Osborne is undeterred and feels the 2014 G2 UAE Derby hero and GI Pacific Classic S. bridesmaid is in good nick.

“We pretty much know what we'll be up against,” he said. “Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) is going to be odds-on and the last time I looked we were 50-1. Let me guarantee you, he won't be that on the day. I think people will cotton on to him. He can't be a 50-1 chance. There's significantly lesser horses in there at significantly shorter prices than him.”
