Dialed In Filly Scores in Eventful Jersey Girl

Chalon | Chelsea Durand/NYRA

Chalon capped off a big weekend in New York for the Peter Miller barn and took advantage of the favored Vertical Oak (Giant Oak) not getting out of the gate to romp in the Jersey Girl S. at Belmont. Wiring her debut at 9-1 last June at Santa Anita, the $110,000 Barretts March buy was shelved for over nine months after that and returned to run sixth in the Apr. 9 Santa Paula S. before annexing an allowance/optional claimer in Arcadia May 7. Made the fourth choice in this local debut, the bay broke sharply and found herself perched on an easy lead after heavy favorite Vertical Oak failed to break with the rest of the field. Attending an easy :23.41 quarter, Chalon turned for home in charge with plenty left and quickly burst away, rolling home a large margin to the good of Golden Mischief in 1:10.60. After a steward's inquiry showed the assistant starter still had a hold of her when the latches sprung, Vertical Oak was declared a non-starter. Third place finisher Sadie Be Good was vanned off after the race. The win was the second stakes victory for Miller, who also took the GII True North S. with Roy H (More Than Ready) Friday. “[When] she was breaking, I had to fight her a little bit and wait just a little bit in this race,” commented winning jockey Paco Lopez. “When I asked her to run, she responded. She's nice.” The sixth stakes winner for her sire, Darby Dan Farm's Dialed In, Chalon is from the same family as MGSW & MGISP Red Attack (Alydar), as well as GI Hollywood Oaks heroine Patches (Majestic Light) and GSW & GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up La Spia (Capote).
