Douglas Recovering After Surgery

Jockey Rene Douglas, who was injured during a fall in the GIII Arlington Matron H. at Arlington Park Saturday, exited surgery performed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago satisfactorily, however, did not recover sensation in his lower legs following the seven-hour procedure Sunday. According to officials, the 42-year-old had screws inserted to stabilize a pair of fractures in his neck, however, the main concern appears to reside in the thoracic region in his spine. Reports suggest that a long-term prognosis would not be known until the swelling decreased, which may take from 10 days to two weeks. Douglas is expected to be sent to a Northwestern rehabilitation clinic after spending two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit.
