Dream Tree remained undefeated with a powerful return to action off a near seven-month layoff in Sunday's GII Prioress S. at the Spa. Venturing outside of California for the first time in her career, the daughter of Uncle Mo hooked up with the speedy Mia Mischief on the turn and forged clear from that one late to notch a decisive victory.
Away just behind the top flight as Mia Mischief quickly established the front, Dream Tree slid up to engage the pacesetter past a :22.30 opening quarter mile and knocked heads with that rival through a half-mile in :44.93. Dream Tree found another gear in the stretch, however, and muscled home convincingly, as Mia Mischief kept finding on the inside to hold on for second over a rallying Moonshine Memories.
“Man, she brought it today,” said winning trainer Bob Baffert. “She had been training so well and we were debating on running her [at Del Mar] in a stake on closing day or take her to Saratoga. We decided to give her a shot since she was doing so well. I'm just glad she shipped well and is still undefeated. That freshening really helped her. She's really matured a lot. She showed today how good she really is. It's pretty exciting.”
Dream Tree began her career with two nose wins over subsequent GI Santa Anita Oaks heroine Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute) in an Oct. 27 maiden event and the Nov. 18 Desi Arnaz S. She successfully carried her speed over a route of ground with a comfortable win in the GI Starlet S. at Los Alamitos Dec. 9 and kicked off her 2018 season with a sharp win in the one-mile GII Las Virgenes S. at Santa Anita Feb. 4. Knocked off the GI Kentucky Oaks trail with a minor injury, the filly was sidelined for the spring and returned to the worktab in early July.
Pedigree Notes:
Originally an $80,000 KEENOV weanling, Dream Tree progressed to sell for $225,000 to JSM Equine as a Fasig-Tipton July yearling before being flipped for $750,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Florida offering. The winner hails from the same female family that produced GI Travers S. winner Golden Ticket (Speightstown).
