Dubawi's Journey Dominates the Princess Royal

Journey | Racing Post

Not seen since winning the G3 Pinnacle S. at Haydock May 28, Journey carried on where she left off by recording back-to-back successes in this competitive affair under typically enterprising tactics. On a roll last autumn, the homebred went from this to finishing runner-up to Simple Verse (Ire) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. over the same trip at Ascot in October. Returning to be third in the G2 Middleton S. over an inadequate 10-furlong trip at York May 12, the bay disappeared after the Pinnacle but looked as if she had not missed a step with Frankie Dettori intent on taking the lead straightaway. Hassled by Beautiful Romance approaching the final quarter mile, the homebred only needed to be pushed out to turn back that rival and ultimately record a commanding success from her stablemate Lady of Camelot. “It was a super run under a penalty,” trainer John Gosden commented. “It is the same prep as last year and hopefully she will go to Champions Day now. I was pleased with her. She was going to go to the [G2] Lancashire Oaks, but she had a problem before that. I just had to give her time off. She has come back better and stronger. She was a bit fresh and full of herself, but she did well with the eight-pound listed penalty. I was very happy with her work and I would have been disappointed if she had got beaten. The other filly ran a super race and I am over the moon with her. It was a great run. We will try win a listed race with her.” The G1 Prix Royal-Oak, G2 Prix de Royallieu and dual G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris heroine Montare, who was also runner-up in the G1 Prix Vermeille, had another winner on Thursday when her 3-year-old gelding Travelling Man (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) scored for Freddy Head at Saint-Cloud. She also has a foal full-brother to that runner, with a yearling filly by Mastercraftsman (Ire) also to come.
