Off since winning the May 11 G3 Musidora S. at York, So Mi Dar defied any rustiness and an eight-pound penalty to score with real authority and suggest a profitable autumn campaign is ahead of her. Going two better than her celebrated dam Dar Re Mi when impressively winning that prestigious Oaks trial which followed a success on her seasonal return in Epsom's Investec Derby Trial also over this trip Apr. 20, the homebred picked up where she left off in this competitive affair. Held on to in third early by Frankie Dettori, the enthusiastic bay was full of running in the straight and when let loose passing the quarter pole surged away before being pushed out with hands and heels for a cosy half-length verdict over Nezwaah. Arabian Queen was on her case, making it a trifecta for their sire.
Connections have Chantilly and Ascot on their minds now after such an impressive display. “She was not fully wound up today, but she's done everything smoothly and there's plenty more to come,” Dettori said. “I haven't ridden her since the Musidora but Gary Foster, who is in charge of her, thought he had her ready to run but not fully wound up to win a group one.” Owner-breeder Lady Lloyd Webber added, “I think we have to look at Chantilly [for the Oct. 2 G1 Prix de l'Opera] and Champions Day. Chantilly seems a long way off, but it will soon be here. It would be fairly bullish to go for the main event [the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe] and we'll probably stick against her own sex. Maybe next year we'll try to win the Arc.”
Dar Re Mi, one of the more accomplished distaffers of recent times who was successful in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks, G1 Pretty Polly S. and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic and placed in the G1 Prix Vermeille and GI Breeders' Cup Turf, produced the MGSP De Treville (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) straight off the bat with So Mi Dar being only her second foal. The debut of her 2014 colt by Frankel (GB) named Erdogan (GB) will be keenly anticipated, while she has two full-siblings to this winner, a yearling filly and colt foal. The second dam Darara (Ire) (Top Ville {Ire}) is one of the most significant dam influences of the modern era, translating much of the prowess that saw her capture the G1 Prix Vermeille to her clutch of top-class sons and daughters including the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup hero Diaghilev (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), known in Hong Kong as River Dancer, the ill-fated G1 Prince of Wales's S. and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic winner Rewilding (GB) (Tiger Hill {Ire}) and G1 Ranvet S.-winning sire Darazari (Ire). The group-placed third dam Delsy (Fr) (Abdos {Fr}) was responsible for the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club-winning champion and prolific sire Darshaan (GB) and the G2 Prix de Royallieu-winning highweight Dalara (Doyoun {Ire}), who later produced the G1 Coronation Cup and G1 Hong Kong Vase-winning sire Daliapour (Ire).
