Ann Arbor Eddie rolled to a 4 1/4-length victory against fellow Cal-breds going 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita Oct. 29, and finished a solid third behind 'TDN Rising Star' and subsequent GI Los Alamitos Futurity hero Mastery (Candy Ride {Arg}) and the reopposing California Diamond (Harbor the Gold) in the GIII Bob Hope S. trying the Del Mar dirt Nov. 19. Sent off at 5-2, the chestnut found himself in lockstep with heavy favorite California Diamond from the bell and the duo strolled through the first quarter mile in :24.53. The pace quickened slightly, with Ann Arbor Eddie a neck behind his rival to his outside through a half-mile in :47.68. Not done yet however, the Reddam homebred began to edge away from the favorite in upper stretch and held on to add a first black-type win to his ledger. “The Square Eddies are unbelievable,” said winning trainer Doug O'Neill. “They have so much heart to them and they have speed and stamina. [Jockey] Mario [Gutierrez] was going to play off whatever [jockey] Kent [Desormeaux] did on California Diamond because we knew he was the obvious horse to beat. Drawn inside we thought Kent would use us as a target. It was a horse race all the way around there.” Ann Arbor Eddie has a yearling full-sister and a weanling full-brother.
