'TDN Rising Star' Shagaf (Bernardini) will break from the rail as he puts his unbeaten record on the line against seven foes in Saturday's GI Wood Memorial S. at Aqueduct. The Shadwell homebred, who annexed the local GIII Gotham S. last out Mar. 5, was installed as the 2-1 favorite on Eric Donovan's morning line. He will be joined in the gate by fellow Chad Brown pupil and GIII Jerome S. winner Flexibility (Bluegrass Cat). Outwork (Uncle Mo), second after setting the pace in the GII Tampa Bay Derby Mar. 12, drew the eight hole and was assigned a 5-2 morning line quote. Matt King Coal (Cool Coal Man), who bested 'Rising Star' and GI Toyota Blue Grass S. contender My Man Sam (Trappe Shot) in a Mar. 6 allowance, makes his graded stakes debut.
The top five finishers from the GII San Felipe S. comprise half of the field for Saturday's GI Santa Anita Derby. That race's speedy winner, 'Rising Star' Danzing Candy (Twirling Candy), is 9-5 on Jon White's morning line, while runner-up Mor Spirit (Eskendereya) was made the 8-5 chalk.
Unbeaten superstar filly and fellow 'Rising Star' Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro) will break from the innermost post against six rivals in the GI Santa Anita Oaks. Complete Santa Anita fields will be published in Friday's TDN.
