Emirates Field Taking Shape

Gingernuts | Trish Dunell

Te Akau Racing's MG1SW Gingernuts (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) will fly to Melbourne on Wednesday ahead of an intended start in the 2000-metre G1 Emirates S. at Flemington on Nov. 11. The gelding is coming off a narrow defeat in the rescheduled G1 Livamol Classic at Hastings earlier this month. The Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards trainee captured last season's G1 New Zealand Derby, G1 Rosehill Guineas and this September's G1 Windsor Park Plate.

“He went a super race and we were really happy with him,” Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis told Racing And Sports. “It was a month between runs.”

Joining him will be Godolphin's listed winner Folkswood (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), who ran third in the G1 Cox Plate behind Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) on Saturday.

“He ran a huge race,” said trainer Charlie Appleby's travelling foreman Chris Connett.

Plans for the leading lady herself, Winx, remain fluid. Trainer Chris Waller was pleased with how well the three-time G1 Cox Plate victress came out of her latest triumph and the Emirates has not been ruled out.

“She's very bright,” said Waller. “The staff said she's fantastic, so that was music to my ears. She's an amazing athlete. It helps her recover so quickly. She'll rise to any challenge you give her. We've just got to make sure that challenge isn't a breaking point.”
