In this series, the TDN catches up with European expatriats working in the Thoroughbred industry around the world.Today's installment features Royston Murphy, of Sledmere Stud.
Hometown? Small village called Kilmeague in Co. Kildare, Ireland.
How did you end up where you are now? I came to Australia in '95 to work for Segenhoe Stud. After spending 17 years working there, myself and my wife decided to join forces and take over the running of Sledmere Stud, which was originally owned by my wife Catriona's late grand aunt Ann Raymond.
What have you found to be the major difference between racing/breeding in Australia and your home country? I think the biggest difference is Australia's main focus on breeding sprinters and 2-year-olds. Also, the prize money on offer in Australia, for all levels of racing, far exceeds most other countries'.
Name one home comfort that you miss? That has to be the food, even after all these years I love going home and having a good Irish stew.
Favourite sport or hobby outside of racing? I love going fishing and hunting in remote far North Queensland.
What would you say is your proudest accomplishment? On a personal level, being the father of two great boys Jack and Ted. On a professional level, playing a major role in the building and development of Segenhoe Stud and now doing the same at Sledmere Stud.
