Canterbury Park conducted 12 900-metre 2-year-old trails Monday, with Darley stallion Exceed And Excel (Aus) represented by four winners. The speediest of the quartet–and of the dozen trails–was Witherspoon (Aus) in heat eight, who saluted in :53.25 for trainer Brad Widdup. The A$500,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate was joined by Godolphin's duo of heat seven hero Hiemal (Aus) and Osorno (Aus), who landed the last trial of the day. Chris Waller trainee and A$450,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast purchase Performer (Aus) rounded out the foursome, winning heat nine.
“Hiemal and Osorno certainly look the most likely [Sept. 30 Listed] Breeders' Plate runners,” said trainer James Cummings regarding the full-brother to MGSW and sire Kuroshio (Aus) and the son of a half-sister to Group 2 winner Ghisoni (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}), respectively. “We'll see how they all come through before making a decision, but it looks like we have some nice youngsters.”
Co-trainers Peter and Paul Snowden sent out three winners on the day: A$400,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast acquisition Bondi (Aus), by last season's champion sire Snitzel (Aus), to take heat three; champion juvenile Pierro (Aus)'s daughter Satin Slipper (Aus) prevailed in the sixth; and the most expensive winner on the card, Munich (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), who cost A$750,000 at the same sale, took the 10th.
A pair of juveniles by I Am Invincible (Aus) gave trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott two wins Monday. Landon (Aus) scored in the first trial of the day, while his stablemate, filly Bold Arial (Aus), won the fourth heat.
