Though she had never been headed in her previous five career appearances, Kaleem Shah's Fantastic Style was allowed to stalk a fast pace in the Great Lady M. S. at Los Alamitos and closed off well to best her elders and suggest that a race like the GI Longines Test S. Aug. 8 at Saratoga could be in the offing.

A debut second sprinting at Santa Anita on the second day of the winter/spring meet Dec. 27, the $525,000 OBS April graduate broke her maiden by three good-looking lengths Jan. 19 and cleared her first allowanc/e condition Feb. 26. An even third after setting a wicked pace in Keeneland's GII Beaumont S. Apr. 12, the bay returned to Southern California and dusted her peers by 3 1/4 lengths in the May 16 Angel's Flight S. up in Arcadia.

With the early pace Saturday, Fantastic Style eased back into third and allowed Amaranth (Scat Daddy) and the previously undefeated Sunday Rules (Tribal Rule) to duke it out through a fast opening section of :21.46. The latter edged to the front three furlongs from home, but Bejarano had Fantastic Style poised to pounce at the head of the stretch, took command easily with about an eighth of a mile to race and came away to score impressively.

“My filly has speed, but I didn't want to give her too much to do early,” the winning jockey commented. “When I saw [Amaranth and Sunday Rules] dueling up front, I just let her settle and she gave me a real nice finish.''
