Fiftyshadesofhay to Stonestreet
Fiftyshadesofhay (Pulpit), winner of this year’s GII Ruffian S., will be joining the broodmare band at Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Farm after selling for $1.3 million at Keeneland Wednesday.
“We liked the mare–we’ve seen her race,” Banke said. “She is beautiful. Pulpit is a great broodmare sire and she has the looks and the frame to be a great addition to our broodmare band, which, as you know, is a good one.”
Fiftyshadesofhay sold as a racing or broodmare prospect, but Banke confirmed the bay will be retired.
“She is going to enjoy life at the farm. She’ll come and hang out with Dayatthespa,” Banke said.
Stonestreet purchased GI Breeders’ Cup F/M Turf winner Dayatthespa (City Zip) for $2.1 million at Monday’s Fasig-Tipton November sale.
Fiftyshadesofhay was a $175,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase in 2011. Racing for Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, the 4-year-old won the 2013 GIII Santa Ysabel S., GII Black-Eyed Susan S. and GIII Iowa Oaks. She added the GII Ruffian S. this term and retires with five wins from 20 starts and earnings of $1,097,951. She was consigned Wednesday by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency as hip 297.
