The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance received a $5,000 donation during the Fillies and Lilies Party held Friday night at the Derby Museum at Churchill Downs. Jill Byrne, Director of Broadcast and Programming for Churchill Downs, accompanied by former rider Rosie Napravnik, accepted the check on behalf of the TAA.
“There is a growing recognition in the industry that this is an important cause,” Byrne said. “These elegant, majestic, passionate horses are special. They love to run. They are incredible athletes with unique personalities. They deserve to be cared for after their racing days.”
Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance certifies and directs financial support to organizations that provide homes for racehorses after their careers. Currently, 56 aftercare organizations supporting 180 facilities in the U.S. and Canada have been granted accreditation and received funding from TAA.
Friday evening's festivities, which attracted a crowd of some 500, also featured a performance by country music star Wynonna Judd. Among the attendees were NFL Hall of Famers Warren Moon, Thurman Thomas and Sterling Sharpe.
