Fiorente, Carlton House Gallop
FIORENTE, CARLTON HOUSE GALLOP
Last year’s G1 Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and The Queen’s Carlton House (Street Cry {Ire}) partook in a public gallop between races at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney yesterday. Both horses are being prepared by Gai Waterhouse for Australian autumn campaigns.
Carlton House, last seen finishing 13th, beaten five lengths, in his Australian debut last March, nipped his stable companion on the line of the 1200 meter move. Favored for the 2011 G1 Epsom Derby following a victory in the G2 Dante S., Carlton House has not won since taking the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. in May 2012. Waterhouse noted he should see the racetrack in the coming weeks.
Despite being caught yesterday, Fiorente’s rider James McDonald was full of praise for the 6-year-old. “From when I galloped him during the spring, he has developed and his stride is a lot better,” McDonald told Racingandsports.com.au.
Waterhouse has outlined an ambitious autumn campaign for her first Melbourne Cup winner.
“There’s the [G1] Futurity [Feb. 22] and the [G1] Australian Cup [Mar. 8] in Melbourne, but I don’t want to travel him in the heat,” Waterhouse told Racingandsports.com.au. “I know it’s cooled down a bit in Melbourne at the moment, but he can do all his work here and if we decide to go there, we will. Otherwise there is the [G1] Chipping Norton S. [Mar. 8] into the [G1] Ranvet [Mar. 22], the [G1] BMW [Apr. 5] and the [G1] Queen Elizabeth [Apr. 19] in Sydney.”
